The Charlestown Preservation Society’s ‘Community Spaces and Places Committee’ is excited to share a new program to grow Charlestown’s Urban Forest, empowering residents to plant, preserve, care and advocate for trees in the neighborhood. Our mission is to grow a greener and healthier Charlestown by expanding the urban forest and fostering community engagement. Through tree planting and care, we aim to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and enhance the neighborhood’s beauty and quality of life. Together, we’re building a sustainable, connected, and vibrant future for all.

Urban trees are a critical asset to cities: they sequester carbon, reduce energy usage, remove air pollutants, filter stormwater, and cool hot city streets by providing shade and releasing water vapor.

The Committee is working with City of Boston’s Urban Forestry Division and nonprofit Speak for the Trees to advocate for increasing Charlestown’s Urban Forest holistically. We will work to grow the forest by increasing awareness around the benefits of urban street trees, advocating for resources in Charlestown, identifying and sharing the resources dedicated to urban trees, and supporting residents in the care and maintenance of their urban street trees.

Did you know that one tree can do the work of TEN air conditioners? That is just the beginning of what these green superheroes can do for our community! Join us in growing Charlestown’s Urban Forest, and bring more shade, beauty and fresh air by planting and caring for the neighborhood’s trees.

Request a Free Tree!

When you call, you can request a specific species of tree

A city arborist will inspect the site to determine appropriateness, and if approved, a tree will be planted within about a year. Trees are planted twice yearly in the spring and fall.
